Ex Novo Brewing Co. fought hard for their 3rd place position in our Top 5. Of the 8 beers we tried everything fell above the 3.5 mark with ease. Lucky for me, and not so much for Melissa, we visited at the start of “Fresh Hop” season. Fresh hop beers are exactly what they sound like and Ex Novo had several on tap already.
Their Eliot IPA, our favorite from Ex Novo, came in two fresh hop varieties – Strata and Centennial from Goschie Farms about 50 minutes south of Portland. While the standard Eliot IPA sits at a 3.85 on Untappd, the Strata and Centennial fresh hops excel past 4.1 and are clearly local favorites judging by the comments sections.
Ex Novo does offer beers other than IPA’s, but for hop heads, Ex Novo is a must visit late September thru early October. If you’re not a huge fan of hops, give the Cactus Wins the Lottery a shot. The easy drinking, 4.3% Berliner with prickly pear hits the spot on a warm September afternoon.
This is a great brewery. Rob made it awesome. He gave some great recommendations. The only thing that would make it better was if there was food available. But since there isn't, head over to Cliff's PDX to get some steak and fries.
Let me start with the food here. It was amazing. Very likely the best food we had at a Brewery on our whole trip. The Detroit Style pizza was crunchy and cheesy and I want more of it. My wife got a Mac & Cheese w/ Bacon, green chilis and fried chicken added. It was stellar, definitely her favorite dish of the whole trip. The Pretzel was decent, but was a little thin in spots which cause that part to be crunchy. The Hush puppies were great, and I wanted more of them as well.
The beer was good here, with quite a few options to be had. Nothing really stood out beer wise. They are also a non-profit, which is awesome.
Ex Novo was the first bar we visited on our Oregon coast trip, and it was easily the best one we went to on our trip. The bartender kept us entertained the whole time with good chat about the beer, some cool history and pour styles and some good places to grab a bite to eat. Love the atmosphere and location. Recommend this spot for sure.
This Brewery was great. We were stopping in for just a beer in passing and we're greeted and accommodated superbly. The beer was creative and delicious. On top of that, as parents with friends, we did not once feel out of place having our child with us. The establishment was very kid friendly as well as a few dogs sitting outside. The one thing that really stood out was the changing stations they have set up in the bathrooms. It is pretty incredible. Please see pictures for best representation. As a new parent it's very hard to get out and the effort they put in on that was great. Because of the above I plan on frequenting this place as much as I can when in the neighborhood. Great Job!
Solid spot for quality PNW beer, whiskey and grub. Totally dig their malt fries and the times when I find mussels on their menu. Options rotate and usually bring something pretty delicious. Their deep dish, Detroit-style pizza is a delicious and reliable staple. Don't skip ordering the Forager pie at least once. So good, if you like wild mushrooms and thick pie 😉 Also, ExNovo, please bring back your smoked beet Ruben sandwich. I cross my fingers each season hoping to see its glorious return ❤️🥪
Been wanting to try this spot for a while now!! Big space in NE with a two floors for seating and garage looking windows for when the weather gets nice!!
Obviously beer selection is on point. They have great options and something for every no matter what you're looking for.
Food was an awesome surprise. Their burger and chicken sandwich were awesome and tasted even better than they looked which was a surprise because they looked amazing!! Good menu selection of bar eats!!
We were there on a slow day and the service wasn't anything too special.
We loved it here! They had indoor and outdoor seating and a beer type for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed the cheeky tiki and puff puff passion fruit sours. The wild ale was very good, as well as the dark Mexican lager. The green chili beer cheese soup is sinful...we got a cup...get the bowl. It was perfectly spicy and so tasty!
Cheers 🍻
